Miles of Mules

     Miles of Mules          Mule

Patterned after a public art program introduced in Zurich, Switzerland several years ago that placed 800 life-sized cows throughout the countryside to encourage public appreciation of art, the "Miles of Mules" project did the same in Pennsylvania.

The mules were chosen in acknowledgement of the crucial role they played in the area's development by pulling mine cars and towing canal boats loaded with coal to markets in Philadelphia and New York.

Clad in everything from tuxedos to old newspaper clippings to plastic apples to feathers and shards of glass, the mules showcase the creative talents, passions, and convictions of artists both budding and renowned.

The Cultural Council's prototype was a beautiful mule named Blossom. The wonderfully rendered flower child mule was conceived in the imagination of Kingston artist Nina Davidowitz. Blossom's uncommon grace and stately presence provided the impetus for recruiting many area artists and sponsors.

In addition to the Historic Corridor, driving forces behind the project include the Banana Factory Art in South Side Bethlehem, the Cultural Council of Luzerne County, and the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, which joined the project to showcase local artists and encourage regional travel.

The commemorative book captures the "Miles of Mules" public art project in all its splendor. Own the 124-page hardcover collector's edition that profiles the artists and their mules, as well as touches on the rich history of the people, canals and counties that make up the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor. A must-have for all fine art, Pennsylvania history and mule aficionados! This lively and colorful book celebrates the popular "Miles of Mules" public art project, which placed hundreds of fiberglass mules, decorated by area artists, throughout eastern Pennsylvania in the summer of 2003. Featuring color photographs of all 170 mules from Bucks, Lehigh, Luzerne and Carbon Counties.
