Commissioners OK $50,000 for arts

Luzerne County commissioners unanimously approved last week $50,000 to fund arts and culture programs run by the Cultural Council of Luzerne County, the council announced on Monday.
The money will pay for increased staffing for daily operations, manage the council's Web site and develop an online calendar of cultural events, organize a retreat for local arts and culture group leaders to discuss needs, offer support to affiliated nonprofits, according to council Chairperson Shelley Pearce.
A nonprofit arts advocacy organization that supports regional arts groups, the council usually is sustained each year through fundraising, small grants, board member support and housing and technical support from Wilkes University, Pearce said. "The county's support will go a long way to advancing cultural programs in Luzerne County," she said.
